Unit: Administrative – Grade Level 8

Division: Facilities Management

Reports To: Executive Director, Facilities Management

Principal Responsibilities:

1. Organizes and supervises department personnel and provides for their training, motivation and performance appraisal. Responsible for all department operations and equipment. Available 24 hours a day, by cell phone, to provide direction when unusual problems occur.

2. Develops and manages various community based crime prevention activities and initiatives.

3. Provides for the investigation and maintenance of files on all crimes and injuries to persons and property.

4. Identifies and makes recommendations for the correction of conditions and practices on campus which might constitute a fire or safety hazard, and recommends procedures for the protection of “sensitive” equipment.

5. Maintains contact with representatives or groups of students, faculty and administrative staff to promote harmonious relations with the college community and the Police Department.

6. Maintains harmonious relations with Police bargaining unit representatives, provides expeditious handling of grievances and participates in contract negotiations.

7. Acts as liaison between the College administration and local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

8. Manage and assure compliance with local, state and federal regulations.

9. Controls all keys and locking systems on campus.

10. Maintains all department records and coordinates the activities of the full-time dispatchers in communications and records.

11. Prepares the budget for the Police Department for approval by the College administration and operates within the approved budget limits.

12. Coordinates with Facilities Maintenance Department actions for snow removal on all streets and parking lots.

13. Provide for the maintenance and operation of all departmental equipment.

14. Such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field

• A Commissioned Police Officer in the State of New Jersey under New Jersey statutes in good standing; must maintain this status

• Six years’ experience in a supervisory position with the rank of Sergeant or higher in a college police department

• Must have strong leadership and communication skills along with the demonstrated ability to deal with a diverse population in a higher education environment

• Training in the area of cultural diversity preferred

• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills

Schedule: Monday - Friday
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Retirement Plan: PFRS

Any new employee hired by Middlesex County College after September 1, 2011 must comply with New Jersey residency requirements.
