  • when should I start applying?

    Hello everyone,

I retire from the military in about 3.5 years and I'm not quite sure yet where I'll be settling down just yet. My wife is finishing school and will be pursuing her career, so I will end up following her most likely. My question is, for those who have experience, when do you recommend that I should start applying for departments? I'm thinking a year prior. Thoughts? I appreciate any recommendations.

9 months to a year is the norm. Federal agencies usually allow up to a year out for you to submit your app and start the process. Local agencies near military bases also usually post instructions for active duty applicants due to the large number that apply.
