    Police work involving the protection of life/property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances

    Primary Responsibilities
    Responsibility for the prevention , detection and investigation of criminal activity.
    Job Description

    Work involves responsibility for the prevention, detection and investigation of criminal activity, while assigned to a specific task or geographic area on an assigned shift.
    Work is performed with considerable independence under general direction of an administrative supervisor, with responsibilities to include problem solving activities while working in conjunction with community organizations.
    Includes the use and care of firearms, communications equipment, gas masks and other necessary equipment.
    This work involves the element of personal danger and requires the exercise of considerable independent judgement including application of policy and procedure and tact.
    Also, includes the use of computers to access information and generate reports.
    The Police officer may be assigned to a specialized unit requiring specialized knowledge, training and work in units, such as vice and narcotics, community policing, criminal investigations, etc.
    Must meet all criteria of the current "Eligibility Standards for Police Officer Positions" as set forth by the City of St. Petersburg (summarized below or at St. Petersburg Police Department Eligibility Standards )
    Job Qualifications

    To be eligible for employment/appointment as a police officer, an applicant must:

    Have not been convicted of a felony crime,

    Have not used, tried, or experimented with marijuana within the last twelve (12) months; and any past use of marijuana does not exceed a total of ten (10) times,

    Have not experimented with any other illegal drugs, unless under the care of a licensed physician.

    Be at least nineteen (19) years of age, in accordance with F.S. 943.13 (1).

    Be a citizen of the United States, in accordance with F.S. 943.13 (2).

    Be a high school graduate or the equivalent as approved by the State of Florida, supplemented with the completion of sixty (60) semester hours (or quarter-hour equivalents) in any recognized discipline at an accredited college or university. Although 60 semester hours is required, an applicant with thirty (30) semester hours (excluding courses given at any police academy), is eligible to apply. An additional thirty-three (33) hours will be granted upon completion of the police academy.

    Personal History Questionnaire, polygraph, vocational assessment/psychological evaluation, physical agility, background investigation, medical exam and drug screen.
