No ATF doesn’t match pay unless you’re below a GS11.

Yeah max they go is 9 step 10. Pretty hard for current 1811s to go to that if you're a high 12/13

  • None. You will either come in as a GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9. If you are already with the federal system the best they can do is a GS-9 Step 10 but that is it.

Yeah thats what I have been told as well. Thats unfortunate

  • Hearing that there is going to be two classes in FY 20 and 10+ classes in FY 21 depending on budget. HQ is pushing hard to increase our agent cap. Also heard of a 4 year in the process applicant getting placed in an academy for FY 20 so if you have been on the ride for a while there is hope!

I will definitely be at 4 years before I get hired. May 16 applicant, pending BI even tho have a current Tier 5 BI.

  • Here is an article from October 13th- that tends to align with the mass hiring requests.

    https://www.washingtontimes.com/news...xplosives-und/

Additionally, here is a timeframe and update about myself. I screened in Feb 2016 and applied in May 2016. PT test Jan 2017. Then ATF lost me until finally in November 2018 a recruiter fixed it and I interviewed. Completed medical in July, and BI interview in September 2019.

Hoping this stirs the forum up a little- feel free to PM as well if you're a lurker.

Cool, than you should hope for the interview then within 45 days or so... based on the recent timelines of this process. Did you ever get a medical clearance email?

Yeah last year lol. I waited a while for the poly after that. Over a year wait. Have to forget you even applied to ATF.

Ha! Thats true- I tried in 2017... thought I would check in- and I learned they had no record I even applied or did PT test! From what it appears if your medical clearance goes over a year you "renew paperwork" but after two years you have to redo it? Have you experienced that?

Out of curiosity, did he have longer than 12 hours to respond?

Nope, looking for that email but I still will be shocked if I get it since this is preference sheet 3.

So is that the first of supposedly two classes for FY20 or is that a class with leftover funding from 19?

The first of a rumored 10 classes for FY20

    • Does the ATF have offices that always have openings because they are hard to fill? NY, LA, and Boston are always open for my agency so I was just wondering if the same were true here.

I wouldn’t phrase it that way. The larger the city, the larger the field office, and the more slots available there. But at any given moment when someone is getting a job offer, there’s no guarantee that a slot will be open in NY or LA. I think Boston is actually pretty highly sought after. We just aren’t as big as some other agencies that seem to always be sending people to NY and LA.

    • Any rumors on class dates. Today is my one year anniversary of Medical clearance and first "final" preference sheet....a whole year of no news!! Woo hoo

      • Well after nearly 4 years I am officially pulling the plug on ATF. I was offered a GS7 and I am a current GS12-1811. No matter what you are currently doing, have done in the years since you applied, or how much you make, the department will only bring you in based on what you submitted to ATF at the time of the application. They base everything off of your resume at the time you applied. Its really unfortunate that this happened as I had high hopes of being matched somewhat closer to what I am now on the 12 scale (which would be a 9/10). Due to the policies in place, the department is unwilling to negotiate anything. I say this information with a heavy heart as I really wanted to join the agency and also with a bit of frustration. It also frustrates me when my friends who are current supervisory agents within the department agree with me when I talk about how this process has been and how my qualifications now and what I have don't count for anything. They agree that the process is rather ridiculous.

I wanted to post this for all of the current 1811s on this thread so you can have more information available to you when and if the time does come for you to get an offer. I believe the ATF is doing itself an extreme disservice by basing offers solely on qualifications at the time of application. It only furthers my belief in this when I talk to current supervisory special agents within the department who also mimic many of my concerns. When the application process takes years—in my case almost four—an applicant’s qualifications can change tremendously. For the sake of the ATF, I do hope the agency changes its policies otherwise the department will be missing out on qualified candidates from all experience levels.

Godspeed gentlemen! I wish you all the luck and hope you all get join join this great agency!

I was a 12/5 when I came on as a 7/10 with ATF after waiting 3 years. Yea the pay cut sucks big time but the job is awesome. Don’t bail if you can pinch pennies for awhile, I think you could end up regretting it. Pay bumps go quick especially since you’re at the academy for 7 of the first 12 months.

Your supervisor friends should get their facts straight. OPM dictates how federal employees are hired. OPM certifies the resumes of applicants and decides at which grade they are eligible for hire. OPM rules do not allow ATF to bump a person up for experience or additional education gained after the initial resume is certified. There are quite a few people whose experience or education changes while they are in the process. Its a federal employment law matter, not an ATF choice.

      • Ive heard there's a class starting in February. I'm not sure if that's an add on to those who already have citp or a new citp + basic class. Has anyone heard anything or gotten a NDF or preference sheet? I know last year everyone starting moving forward around this time and on Christmas Eve got the call for their class dates. Fingers crossed!

The Feb class is an add on. I spoke with HR earlier this week and was told no classes planned until late summer.

If I get picked for the February class I won’t get my full 5 years in the official process!! April 2015 application!

      • I've heard that ATF CITP classes have been added to the FY2020 schedule. One is imminent (January) and then others will follow in June, July and August/September. Perhaps more to be added. Seven to 10 classes to follow in FY2021.

Nope not today, last one was October

          • An ATF CITP class started this week. Another has been added for June. Others are scheduled for July and September and there has been discussion of additional classes in 2020 that have not yet been added to the schedule. Even more hiring coming in 2021.
