  • "No news is good news" is and always will be- the battle cry for any aspiring applicant

Also a document stating "You Passed" is not provided after the polygraph. I would assume that if you have not received the thin letter after 6 months your application is not rejected.

As it was explained to me when I finished, there is a QA check after your poly. Your polygrapher does not determine your suitability, it sounded like another polygrapher does based on the results. Lucky for me I was informed my QA check was being performed by someone retiring by the end of December. So I'd say no news is good news because mine should have been determined and I haven't been kicked to the curb yet.

      See not all pessimism.

      • I think the original agent who administered your polygraph still has a say in the matter. It does go to QC for final review but I think the examiner has to pass you as well.

        • April 16er.....Have now completed all steps through the drug screening. Now I wait for Med clearance, poly and background! Is it accurate to expect a 6-8 month wait now until the next step?

          • Prepare for that or more. Hopefully its quicker obviously.

Oct 15er here. My poly was pretty quick. Few months after interview. But Ive been sitting on my hands since September though with no end in sight. The good news is, I got a great new job, new house, and I am deeper into my COSC Masters Program. I keep living my life like the ATF doesn't exist. Thats all I can suggest.

Congrats on new job, new house, and continuing forward with the Master's. Unfortunately, as I am sure I speak for many of us here, some of us hate our current jobs and/or living situation.

Finished my Master's last year, but still working in a position that is disheartening and draining (local PD) in a city I don't believe in. Kinda hard not to look forward and agonize over the 1811 process.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was in similar shoes six months ago, working night shift/weekends/holidays in a job I didn't like. I forced myself to make a career change, knowing that I couldn't hold out for the ATF. Its never too late to redefine yourself. It just takes time, patience, and hard work. Hopefully we will both be down in Georgia soon enough though!

            • For those who received the FedEx package, do we have 30 days or 10 days to complete medical examination? Just want to make sure I'm not interpreting a doc wrong.

When I received my FedEx (this was a year and a half ago, so change is certainly possible), the email they sent to notify that the package was en route listed a hard deadline and explicitly said that date should be used instead of the time frame listed on the forms in the package.

            • I received fedex and immediately called for medical. At the same office I completed medical for another job a month earlier. I completed part 1 within 10 days. However they had no openings to meet with dr until this week. So technically I will have gone over 10 days. I'm sure they are not cutting by people based on Dr availability at federal occupational health.

I would agree. I was fortunate enough to do mine the following day after receiving my packet but I know of others who couldn't schedule until nearly the 30 day mark due to availability. Some FOH places might only have the doctor come in one day a week. That's what it was like where I went.

Hey gang, I wanted to share a piece of info from a conversation I had with a guy in my office who is also in the same stage of the process you guys are in. He said it was told to him, from the time you sign for (receive) the FedEx package you have 10 days to line up "x appointment for whatever". I'm thinking that doesn't necessarily mean to actually have the physical performed, since doctors might not have availability.

                  Just passing along, GOOD LUCK!

I failed the vision portion of the medical exam and was given ninety days to get it corrected. As it was explained to me, there is no way around it. It's expensive, but it is a safety precaution I presume the agency takes. My only regret was not doing it sooner. Now it's been nine months and counting still awaiting medical clearance...

If you think that you are border line then go and get a follow up with your eye doctor and have them test your vision. If you fail the ATF test but pass your eye doctors test then you need to communicate that to the medical team if you are granted an extension. Make it so that the ATF is put in a position where they have to override an eye specialist determination.

Not sure how I screwed that up... I'm Oct 15er, not April. Must have been dreaming.

Rhody- Are you an April 15? Any indication about your BI even while you wait for medical?

Mountaineers#79---- I am Oct 15. No word regarding my background being conducted, which sucks.

                  • I had to take longer than the 30 days allotted due to getting in with the doctor who performed PRK on my eyes along with tracking down some paperwork from around the country for an auto immune disease that I have. The key is communication. Send an email or make a phone call to let the medical team know that you are actively working to complete the packet. Keep them informed of any dates and changes that you are running into and I don't think you will have a problem.

All of this seems like common sense but it is a good reminder to be a professional when you are communicating with anyone from the agency and it will go a long ways. That may sound dumb, but you would be surprised.

My process is slightly different than some others on here but it took me about 5 months to get cleared from medical FYI.

I'm an April 15 applicant and I have passed medical.

                  • Did anyone on here interview at the St. Paul office? If so, have you heard anything?

I think we may be waiting until the summer. Just depends on when the first class is scheduled and/or funding comes available.
