  • Department of the Navy Police Officer

I did a few different searches, using different key words, and found nothing.

The gig is a GS-0083-05/07 job and it keeps popping up in my daily emails from USAJobs in different areas, the latest in an area that I'm looking to move.

From the description, it sounds like a full-fledged Police Officer position of which I MORE than qualify with Federal benefits and the ability to transfer to another location.

I did a search on the internet and "Department of Defense Police Officer" came up from Wikipedia.com () but it's pretty generalized and I don't know how accurate it is.

Anyone have any real-world experience information about the job/morale/advancement opportunities/special divisions/equipment/working conditions/etc.? Is it more like base security, where you work the gate, or are you a Police Officer for the Military installations for which you work? How do the "citizens" you serve treat you if you've never served in the military? Any information about the hiring process/PT tests?

Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

It all depends on the location I spent most of my enlistment at Naval Station Newport as an MA working with 0083s. There they did patrol and gates were manned by contract guards. The guards are gone now and they hired new 0083s to stand the gates while others patrol. There was no special teams but again that changes from base to base. It really all depends where you end up...

          !!!!!

Sounds like I should pass (no offense to anyone who does the job) unless things have changed since the posts in those threads. Sounds like a lot of mismanagement and a lot of angry officers.

BTW - NO CLUE about the different abbreviations - good to know them now! Thanks for the info!

For some folks, it's a j-o-b in this economy, with benefits, and a foot in the door with the feds. From what I have gathered here, it looks like many move on to other fed jobs. It is what it is. No take home gun. Often, I've had to wait for the 0083 officers to finish up turning in the weapons at the door after their shift before I could enter the armory and store my weapons.
