  • What is the deal with BOP?

Are they that hard to get on? I just applied for CA and applied in the past.
I have heard from others, that they are strict with score.
    I thought they needed people.
But, I hear 96 is the cutoff for score.

I've applied repeatedly with a 98 for GL05 and a 96 for GL07. Been turned down from 2 location specific postings, and never heard back from the open continuous. The 2 I was turned down from was "eligible but not among the most qualified canidates". I was a MA in the Navy as a patrolman with numerous arrests under my belt along with processing them and acting as a "CO" while they are held within our detention cell. I've deployed to Afghanistan and detained numerous Taliban and processed them for turnover to a detention facility, including prisoner escorts. So I have some experience with detention work, yet I didn't get selected. So yeah, I don't know whats up with the BOP apparently in this economy they're not hurting as bad as they previously had been.

Wow, thats telling that they turned a guy like you down with you background. I have read other forums where they make it sound like they are desperate for bodies, must not be the case anymore.

My thinking is this, with the wars going and all the detention camps plus GITMO, there's a pretty good supply of vets with solid corrections experience.

I have 3 years in the BOP and they have changed there hiring process up alot in recent months. Pretty much if your not a vet you are not gonna get in. There are some exceptions but its few and far between. If anyone has questions about the BOP feel free to PM me or post on here

That is not always the case. I was hired (Oct. 2009) and I'm a non-vet.

The BOP is one of the easiest federal jobs to land. The thing is that you might have to take a position in a less desirable location. Anywhere in West Virginia, or Kentucky.

btw, federallyfunded, which facility do you work at? I'm at USP Leavenworth. I'm a hack.

Thats what I have heard as well, BOP is easy to land and a good way to stop the clock. Did you LE or corrections experience?

Yes indeed. I started out with the Kansas DOC. The pay was terrible, but my coworkers were great, and I learned a lot. If you want to know the truth, I initially turned up my nose to Kansas DOC because of the pay, and the fact that I wanted to be a police officer, not work in a prison. After a devastating lay off, and continued failures in the application processes with police departments, I humbled myself and applied. That was 2 years ago. I have been a correctional officer ever since. First with Kansas DOC, and now with the BOP.

Yeah, it sucks. My facility is asking for an exemption so they can hire 15 new correctional officers.

Yea its a retarded freeze when most of the institutions are asking for exemptions. I would like to transfer to Leavenworth or Springfield.

Believe me, you are in a good place right now. This place is full of homesteaders. Makes it hard to move up. Also I'd be willing to bet that you have a ton more overtime than we do. Keep in mind we are just an FCI, so there aren't that many posts like there are at a complex, so us low guys on the totem pole get royally screwed when we bid for jobs.

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with Tucson. It is a great place to learn all facets of the BOP. USP, Camp, FCI, Women, Pretrial that don't speak english. But my family lives in Fort Leonard Wood, so I would like to see them more often.
