Heading down to FLETC soon (CITP), and wondering what the internet speed and connections are like (looking to nerd-it-up on some Black Ops while down there)?

I read the student information page, but its a little vague.
    http://www.fletc.gov/student-informa...t-service.html

The last thread on FLETC is pretty ancient (pre-2009).

Also, any updated / relevant advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Last time I was down there they had just installed wifi for around $30-$40 a month.

          JB2323,

It all depends on where you are housed. They just upgrade the switches at taj and speeds are pretty good now, but I doubt good enough for xbox live.

I haven't been to FLETC in a couple years, but when I was there the only people to get good bandwidth for Xbox Live/PSN were those with air cards. Those of us that tried WiFi had constant bandwidth issues, though maybe that's change in the last 2 years.

This may be a stupid question.. but is it wireless and/or hardwired into the dorms? Also planning on bringing the Xbox, just want to know if I need a wireless card!

Its wireless, slow during peak times, fast when people aren't around and are sleeping. I am here now, leave Tuesday.

                    TJacks,

The Taj has hard-wired ports by your desk and wireless. Speed is decent for netflix streaming and general web-surfing, I highly doubt you'll be able to play xbox live or anything similar. The high speed bandwidth costs about $40 a month. The only place you could use your wireless cards (AT&t and such) would be the crackhouses, reception at the 180's sucks! you have to walk outside simply to make a call.

I know that there's a decent contingent of us on the forum that are getting prepared to ship out to FLETC in the next month or two, so I figured I might revive this thread and see if we can get some current, relevant information. I have at least two questions at the moment that I haven't seen answered in any of the other threads.

                        1. Is there a library at FLETC or anywhere nearby? (for pleasure reading, not reference stuff)

                        2. Does Virgin Mobile cell phone service work in that area?

Thanks for any answers and I'm sure that I and others will come up with more questions.

                          1) Yes, they do have a "library" but not like a local or county one at home. Books are dated and not all that great.

                          2) Cant help you, other than to suggest you check the coverage maps for VM and Sprint. T-mobile and ATT work... ok. Verizon will be the better of the major carriers.

Concur with the FLETC library. Don't know about the local one, but I wouldn't hold my breath. There was a B&N or a Books-a-Million in town. That might suit you.

As for cell service, I recall that nobody got very good coverage on FLETC itself, but in town it was about what you'd get anywhere.

Brunswick is a sleepy town, but a little on the white-trashy side (and I grew up in the South!). Generally, the locals ignore you as they go about their daily lives. St. Simon's or Jekyll Island are just up the block basically from FLETC and are really great to hit for a day with a cooler full of beer and a swimsuit. If you're more into making it a weekend, head to Savannah (great club district) or Jacksonville. Either one is about an hour up (or down) the road. Oh, and don't forget about Pam's. I was a former cop when I attended FLETC... Pam's is good for a visit just to see all the history they have on the walls of that place.

FLETC was pretty good about sponsoring social activities... deep-sea fishing trips, football games, that sort of thing. Depends on when you're there I guess.

To be honest, being at FLETC reminded me a lot of garrison life on active-duty. So, if you've experienced that, FLETC will seem a little familiar. Routine, boredom, etc.

Caveat here... I attended the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP). The Uniform Training Program guys seemed to have it a bit harder.... always saw them getting marched around and wearing uniforms like they were in basic training. CITP pretty much just expected you to be at certain places at certain times. Show up with all the stuff you needed when you needed it and you'd be okay.

The only caveat I'll add to this point is when I was there (2007) a lot of the FLETC-sponsored recreational activities sold out way to quick. Especially football games in JAX. Had I known then what I did almost 6 months later when I graduated, I would have looked at the football schedule for games when I first got there and bought tickets months in advance, trying to buy them even a couple weeks in advance will land you without a ticket. Some of the other popular events, like shark fishing, could also be tought to get registered for if you waited the week of the event.

The casino boat under the Brunswick bridge always seemed to have space available, go figure! Just remember - whatever you do - stay away from the Red Carpet Lounge, your eyeballs will thank you.
