Is there anyone else who has been told they’re attending the July class? If so, have you receive a FO or heard anything?

I know someone who was told he was.. but has not received a FO as well
-
Thanks, I’ve just been curious. I know someone who is tentatively in the same class with me, and he’s also waiting on a FO.
-
You would usually get a final offer about a month or two prior to you reporting for FLETC.

Iceman5586 Thank you. I thought it would be sooner but this help!

Looking for some input;
I’ve been told by HR that I’ll be attending the July class (have not yet received my FO) and I’m currently a local LEO in a major city. I have a wife and a soon to be 2 year old, and although my wife is open to moving and taking on a new career change, I do know her preference is to stay where we’re at due to being familiar with the area and having friends here and what not. Is anyone else in a similar position where they’re having to make a big decision to put your family through a big move and be gone for 6 months while at FLETC and then an additional 3 months for FTO, and if so, what are your biggest reasons for taking the fed job? Thanks in advance for the input!

I am sure you are aware, but I wanted to remind you because you said you are a local LEO. FPS is an excellent agency with many significant advantages, but one of them is not LE retirement. As of now, FPS does not have enhanced FERS LE retirement provisions. This is unlike any city, state, county, or tribal LE department—just something to keep in mind.

Hello Jjsanders, I am in the same boat. My Tentative offer is for Grand Prairie, TX in Region 7 and this would be a big move for my wife and myself if we had to. I signed the tentative offer under a VRA appointment as a 10 point Veteran. I would have to be converted into the career side once I pass even a 90 day probation or the general 1 year probation period. The appointment includes GS-11 Step 1 to GS-12 and is limited to a one year time frame. I have received good feedback to know that most VRA or special appointments transfer to career almost always with no complications etc. I just got picked up locally for the Veteran Affairs Police here in New Mexico, yet, they too are not a 6c LE retirement. Anyways, I am already looking to figure out where to temporarily stay in Grand Prairie and what my best options are before making any major move from NM to TX. The first year is a wash out basically because of FLETC training etc. will consume most of that time. When I worked as a Protective Security officer under an FPS contract, I remember one of the Inspectors telling me about his move from Phoeniz AZ to Albuquerque, NM as having to stay in motels etc until he eventually was able to find a good place to rent. As a prior federal employee of 30 years, I can tell you that nothing truly beats a federal LE job with all the benefits that come with it and a pension. Whether it is a prime LE retirement or not. In my case, I have my 25 plus military time invested into OPM, so a 6c LE retirement would really count except that 6C LE receive the 1.5 percent of their highest three years, yet, I myself am barely learning about all of the differences. Good luck in your decisions. I know I am moving forward into the unknown with FPS.Last edited by IMpromptuGHost; Today, 01:17 PM.

Anyone knows a typical day for FPS? Is it mostly driving around and responding to calls for service ? When do you get sworn in? Do you get issued a rifle ?

I worked as a PSO under the FPS contract for a little over a year. They do their physical security checks assigned to them throughout the day (federal buildings like SSA, ICE, DEA etc.). Typical week is 5 days a week on a 9-5 schedule. They get most of their federal holidays etc. They do respond to calls from the MegaCenters in their region for any federal property owned or leased, but usually it's because of some Amendment rights issue where a guy is photographing or video taping federal property and assets. Some small disturbances which may include detaining persons for violations of 41 CFR 102.74 Subpart C. At any rate, the perks is that they are assigned an FPS police packaged vehicle, uniforms, radios, and service pistol with some access to M4 Carbines depending on the need. I only seen one Pauly with a rifle on duty. They report 10-8 from their domicile and 10-7 when driving to home for day. It's a gravy day to say the least, but does have its time for action that is usually far and wide in-between.Last edited by IMpromptuGHost; Today, 01:19 PM.

Well, while I have a tentative offer for employment with FPS and ongoing, I have been hired with the Veterans Affairs Police in my city. I'm looking forward to working with them and hopefully it prompts FPS to move forward once I have an opening here in my state. I will have to attend an 8-10 week VA LETC (Accredited by FLETA) academy in N. Littlerock, Arkansas, and if I later decide to continue with FPS, I most likely would have to attend FLETC. I already have NTC training for the DOE/NNSA under my belt, but none of these are transferable unless authorized (not too sure).

Noted. As for understanding the different schools of law enforcement federal, I am aware of the specifics to VA CIT (Crisis Intervention Training when dealing with Veterans, and understand that each LE entity has their own curriculum for specific to their bread and butter. If everything goes as it should, I will have DOE/NNSA. Veteran Affairs, and DHS law enforcement training. Just more to add into my portfolio resume.

Yep. You're probably my age when I worked for pogue agencies. Do your time and work your way up.
Legend goes, when the VA Police were established back in the day, FLETC looked forward to the additional students. When the first VA Academy was established at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis (a 2 week course!), FLETC got mad and wouldn't certify any part in it. I'm surprised to hear that FLETA has anything to do with it even now.
The VA was teaching 'de-escalation' (backing down) long before it became trendy.
Trivia in case you're ever on Jeopardy.

It been about a week since I accepted the TO and have not heard anything.. should I reach out to them or give it a few more days?

Give it a while. There is a group of us starting orientation next week so HR is probably busy with that.

Afectionatecry Sounds good. I’ve been wondering about this too, but like you said, their extremely small HR team is focusing on the now..

I have 32 years of federal service with military time of 10 years, and that's credible years by the way. My work to come with the Veteran Affairs Police will be a good end of career position for me. I have but 9 good years for a pension, TSP/401K, Veterans benefits, and a good solid Social Security benefits package to look forward to. I've surpassed working any ladders...been there and have done that. I assure you that this grunt is no Pogue pencil pusher. Not many can say that, that's for sure.
FYI:
The VA Law Enforcement Training Center provides high quality law enforcement training for those men and women who protect the veterans, staff, visitors, and infrastructure on Department of Veterans Affairs property, as well as that of other government agencies policing parks, military installations and other limited jurisdictions.Last edited by IMpromptuGHost; 03-21-2023, 12:06 PM.

Well after nearly 2 years in the FPS process, and 11 months waiting on medical to clear, I officially dropped out of the process today. Got offered an 1811 spot, so I guess everything happens for a reason. Good luck to you guys!

Brother Wow I can't believe they still have not cleared you yet. It was about a year ago that I also dropped out. If I would have continued I would probably be in the same boat as you, probably still waiting.
Congratulations on the 1811 job! Which agency picked you up?

Congratulations on the 1811 offer. Move forward.

If I've completed an SF-86 in the past for a different agency, and was granted a clearance, does FPS go based off that? Received an email today with yes and no questions asking about any changes since my last SF-86 which I've never done one for FPS but have for another agency.

I cleared a TS clearance back in 2021 so when I got the email asking if anything has changed since my last FS86 I was hoping that would mean they would accept that and just follow up with whatever changes I listed. Fingers crossed that's what they end up doing!
-
So I just had to fill out an SF86c. I had a few other investigations going on with DHS agencies.

From the information I have received in my Tentative offer, a secret clearance is needed. Now, if you already have a clearance such as top secret, secret, L clearance or Q clearance, you will find that FPS and most other federal LE agencies can tap into that information as long as you are in the window of already obtaining a clearance and it has not expired. They can even expedite the background process. Now, the SF-86 follows your profile on USA Jobs and whenever applying to a different agency and the SF-86 is required, you just do an up to date current information from your last entry if anything has changed such as addresses, or if anyone listed has expired and passed on etc. Once you update, that is your latest and greatest to the SF-86 Form. When they offer you to make a copy of your SF-86, make sure you do because you can always go back and look items up such as comments made etc. It's a good method to keep with your same comments as you will see that they retain most of that information anyways. Keep in mind that a background investigation and clearances are different but coincide together for decision making, and of course I am sure you are already aware of this. Thought I would pine in and answer.
