FPS can carry any weapon off duty as long as its not your agency issue. Take home cars..... lots of new guys got hired with no LE background, some were grunts in the Army others were Fire Fighters in the Air Force. It is an LE job.
Right now they are trying to get all this building survey stuff in order. Its a huge change in the way "that" side of the houses business is done. It looks like it may go to only responding to call outs VS doing pro-active law enforcement. (writing cites, looking for pot/crack heads in the park) its a bummer. Hazmat, K-9, bike squads, CI's. its full service.

Any reason for the big change? I mean, I understand adapting things, but to swing so far from one side of the pendulum to the other?

Because that's not FPS's mission. The mission of FPS is to safeguard/protect Federal Buildings and property.... Not out looking for dopers or crackheads in the local park that doesn't have anything to do with the mission.... If you got a doper in front of Fed building....that's one thing. If they are in a park 2 miles from the building and you are passing by.....it's not within your mission to be messing with them. That's a local issue....

As for your question about what FPS does. It all depends on the area you work. I know in DC (from working with them and and riding with them) they did full-service LE Mission in uniform on top of their inspections. DC, at one time, even had a paddy-wagon that one of my buddies use to putt around in..... And yes, it was used a lot there. Fed Buildings in DC had domestics, assaults, people stealing crap from each other, traffic accidents inside the parking areas, homeless tresspassing, etc.....

I talked to a LESO Inspector at a conference in the Midwest a few years ago and things for her were just the opposite. She hadn't worn a uniform in years, hadn't made an arrest in years, and just did her inspections...... She drove around in an unmarked SUV and did her inspections and had enough of those to keep her pretty busy since she was one of the few in the office at that time. It is what it is....

And yes, you will deploy some. I know guys from DC went to Katrina to help safeguard FEMA/DHS assests...... And it was in the media a while back that FPS helped ICE with a Immigration Raid in Iowa.....

It also depends on what region you are in. Some regional directors are very pro law enforcement. FPS "jurisdiction" is in and around federal buildings or if there is a justified "NEXUS" to the mission. So it gives great reach past "just" Federal buildings.

DC is a whole different animal.

I also wanted to add to this: My region is very pro law enforcement, all FPS officers here are commissioned through the state as well as Federal so we can enforce state laws as well...... book em Dano!

Yes it is..... If one wants to work for FPS and do a lot of Police work....DC is where it is at....

Protests, domestics, assaults, robberies, sex assaults, etc.... All in and around Federal Buildings......
