The answer to all 3 of your questions is yes. Do a search, there is a long fps thread that will answer a lot of your questions. FPS is a good federal LEO gig, they seem to only hire inspectors now (leso) which is just like the police officer position with additional security related duties.

Ghost, I appreciate your advice. I've searched, but wasn't able to find anything on the proposed changes to the agency. I know that presently they get take homes, but the question related to if they will be phased out.

I'll be putting in once it opens. Anyone on here from FPS that can fill us in if they've heard anything about a process opening up???

I am not part of FPS, but I believe they actually DO NOT get 24 hour carry authority. That may have changed recently, but that was one of the big gripes (understandably). Inspectors drove to and from work in a marked vehicle, but were not permitted to carry off duty.

Carpe, I do believe you're correct. Reading up on the big bill that's proposed to overhaul the agency and hire up to 500, one thing they want put in is 24 hour carry.

The guys I know in FPS love it. The major drawback is the lack of law enforcement retirement. I have also heard complaints about the transition toward primarily doing security surveys with some added law enforcement. I think most of the people that don't like it maybe wanted to do all LE type stuff. I think that as long as you know that you are primarily a security manager who doubles as a cop, you will be happy with this gig. I would probably be applying too if they had the LE retirement.

Does anyone know the qualifications for the Inspector position?

Would they not be able to carry 24/7 under HR 218?

Also I thought FPS inspectors were 6c?

Permitted under HR 218 and authorized by your agency are two different things.

Carpe is correct, they do not have 24/7, I stand corrected. Nor do they have 6c (they are fighting for both)

Not sure where you are getting that info from but it's incorrect. I just talked to my buddy who retired from FPS last year after 25 years with them.

--He said no clue when they will hire. He said DC is woefully undermanned due to lots of retirements and no new hires in the last 1.5 yeas.....

I should have clarified, you are correct bearcat I meant they cannot carry their duty weapons off-duty as of yet.

Negitive. There is apparently some bill in the HOR/Senate trying to get them more bodies, retirement, and a few other things....I have no status on that as it's been there for a while.....

No worries. Just making sure folks had the right info.... He said that he had 3-4 different weapons he carried off-duty and FPS never checked to see if they were on the list or not.....

Personally, I'd much rather carry my own compact/sub-compact instead of duty issue.....but thats just me.
