  • Been waiting a loooooong time to hear what you guys were saying about announcements opening up. Really don't care what region, just prefer East Coast. Good luck to all who know the mission and want the gig. While they are having some issues, I believe it's a good agency to be a part of and eventually they'll get cleaned up.

    • The hiring was for all regions. Some cities like San Francisco and D.C. had 4 spots available, others like Hawaii and Las Vegas had only 1 spot. I believe a total of 30 spots. They mentioned about maybe going to Camp Lejeune, NC for VRA recruiting, but they did not say when.
What is more important than law enforcement experience or education, and gets you a higher rating, is security assessing experience. I don't think they care about the degrees at all. Thats why prior military are easily qualified. Firewatch, convoy security, guard duty, check points, etc.

Errr...you do realize FPS LESOs have been posting in this thread.....don't you....?

              • @ BEARCAT357, If I took your post out of context then I apologise in advance, but this was the reason for my post:

                1) Yes I know there are LESOs on this thread

                2) If there is knowledge of future MIL/VET recruiting events (beyond what has been stated) then it may be beneficial to members of this forum. Most people cannot attend every job fair in the hopes that "your perfect agency" will attend. I don't live in a strong military area, so information about federal hiring events can be very scarce.

                3) My intention was to pass along info that may be helpful for those who do not live close to large military bases. If I knew FPS was going to be at Scott AFB/St Louis area event, then I'd trek the 300plus miles to get there.

                4) If I was given confidential information I would treat it as such as I understand COMSEC/OPSEC rules. I've been working with that type of info for over 20 years.

                    • Bearcat, unfortunately the word is not trickling down to the line employees concerning these job fairs. This is a push by the DHS Secretary and the current Excutive Branch Chief to fulfill the hire the vet promise. The good news is they are getting lots of responses. The bad news is in this rush I think people will get sent to someplace they really don't want to be. Some people have been tenatively hired only to back out or get weeded out in the screening process.

                      • This job fair is amazing. We are being told we are over our FTE (Full time employees) yet job fairs pop up and those of us in FPS don't know anything about it. Thanks for the info.
God created some police officers perfect, the rest he put in cars.

                          • Is there any way for someone who cannot make the job fair to apply?

Are they planning on posting a VA on USAJobs?

                            • I am not the official word by any means so I can only pass on what I hear. All open postions are expected to be hired through these job fairs. It is part of the DHS role in meeting the Presidents commitment to hire returning vets.

Will they be posted on USAJOBS if the positions aren't filled? I don't know. When I was originally hired by FPS I was a victim of the budget game getting my postion cut before I got a start date. I was told then FPS would not be hiring again for 5-7 years. I was hired 2 years later. So the only consistency is the lack of it.

Good questions. Don’t plan on seeing any USA jobs postings any time soon, right now it is more cost effective to do the job fairs instead. The question was asked on behalf of those that can’t make it to the east or west coasts for the job fairs. FPS might do a referral process, something the agency is looking into. Probably similar to HSI, not sure how that works. I don’t want to put too much hear say info out there, but make friends with your local inspectors and hopefully information will trickle down. There are many regions with openings. Lots of the older guys are retiring. They will have to get people hired sooner than later; unfortunately agencies like FPS don’t have a ton of money lying around. The hiring process costs the agencies some big dollars.
I wanted to put some info out there for the guys that really want this job. It seems like it wasn’t that long ago I came to officer.com for answers to how this process works. Obviously being a vet helps, especially right now, but if you are not currently law enforcement you better be working on some continued education. Finish that Bachelors, doesn’t matter if it’s in Security Management or Education, it checks a box for qualifications and might get you from a 7 to a 9 starting. Good luck to those that are charging forward.
