  • What is the lateral process between federal agencies?

What is the process to go from one fed agency to another assuming that they will accept the training program that the applicant has gone through. Must the applicant wait for a posting on USAJOBS or can that be circumvented? Will the process be accelerated for lateral or academy grads?

You generally have to go wait for a vacancy announcement and if you're selected you may not have to take the basic criminal investigator course, but you will have to complete the agency specific add on.

With agencies like the FBI and DEA, you are treated like any other candidate and have to go through the complete new agent training.

I guess in short, it depends on the agency.

You will retain your retirement savings, and the rate at which you accrue annual/sick leave. Depending on the kind of training you received, and the position you are moving into, you may qualify for a higher GS pay level. If you are moving from one job that required you attend UPTP or CITP to another job that also required you attend UPTP or CITP, you may be exempted from repeating that portion of the training, though you will still have to attend agency specific training.

You should also keep in mind that you will have to complete another probationary period for whatever agency to which you transfer.

The process for transferring is very similar to the process for new hires. A person must still apply, and many times go through the entire process just like the general public, including the background investigation.

Theres no such beast as a lateral transfer in the government. Your applying for a new position which is restricted to current fed employees/vets etc...
