  • Pros and Cons of a VRA announcement

Could someone tell me the pros and cons to a VRA announcement.

I know about the 2 year probation period versus 1. Not sure why that is.

But why is VRA so drastically different than VEOA or CE.

I applied to a BOP Correctional officer VRA announcement.

I know VRA allows veterans to apply non-competitively for a position, which would allow you to get a slot in a facility that doesn't do much hiring. I know that may be a benefit for some, but a 2 year probation with the BOP would suck. It seems like you can lose your job for anything while on probation, and they really limit the tasks and duties that probationary officers can do. Imagine not being able to join SORT or DCT for 2 years. Imagine not being able to do any cross development training for 2 years. Imagine being kept on the rookie roster with 1 month rotations for 2 years. Imagine not being able to work certain posts in your facility for 2 years. Meanwhile any CO hired the same day as you not under VRA would get all of those opportunities after only 1 year.

Honestly I don't know if I could handle such a long probationary period with the BOP. I can't wait until I can start enjoying some of the benefits.

Many federal LE jobs have probationary periods of two and even three years. It sucks yes but many people have done it w/o issue. Just don't bang in unless you are really sick. You have to bite your tongue quite a bit but it can be done. Also many wardens will not let you transfer to another joint if you are in probationary status. It sucks w/o question but don't let an extended probationary period scare you off from a job (if) you really want the job.

Yeah but those agencies aren't like the BOP. If I had a 3 year probation as an 1811, it wouldn't be so bad. As a hack though, especially with the 1 month rotations, and the lack of training opportunities, 2 years is way too long.

Well couldn't you just apply to a VEOA job to the same facility and get in under that while your working as a VRA?

As a former BOP S/O I can attest, you are correct. BOP management is horrible. The ability to kiss *** and move frequently are the only requirements for promotion. EOT
