  • Applying for Reserves AND Police Department at same time. Advice please!

So, I have a general plan, but I thought I'd solicit you all for your opinions on feasibility and suggestions. I'm kind of anxious about timing everything so that graduation, Reserves enlistment, job, and moving to a new state align as closely as possible. Who knows if it's even possible!

I will graduate with my BA sometime this coming summer. I am also currently in the process of enlisting with the Coast Guard reserves, preferably as a Port Security Specialist. Now I'm thinking about looking for openings Louisiana so I can also hopefully work for NOPD (I know I asked for your opinions and suggestions, but please don't tell me to not apply for this department; I've read all the posts about it already). I live in NY, so I would take a trip during Spring Break in mid-April to do the application in one go (they are very accommodating for out of state applicants).

I heard that if everything works out with the USCG, I could do Basic in the summer. However, I have one more class I need to take so I'd most likely have to delay Basic until after the summer. Unless there is a way to get trained and then delay deployment by one semester to finish the class.

Just so you know, I have a clean record and a good GPA.

If I don't get into NOPD (though I have no reason to think I won't get in, who knows), then I would still do the Reserves in NY. So here is my question: is it doable for me to time this so that I know for certain about NOPD (for which I'll apply in April) before locking myself in to a certain base for Coast Guard? Is it doable for me to have all of this arranged so that I can move to a new city with everything already aligned and ready for me? If I get offered a job for NOPD, and a spot with Coast Guard in Louisiana, would I do police academy or boot camp first?! How is this all going to work?

    Thank you in advance!

Do one thing at a time.

You seem pretty young and motivated which is a good thing, but you need to make a priority list and follow it. If you jump into everything at once, none of them will work out.

I'm going to go out on a limb here...you've never been to N'awlins, have you? I wont tell you not to join that department, but I do question the logic of you wanting to live in the New Orleans area.

If you must move down there, make sure you try to live on the North Shore. Good luck in your ambitions! I wouldn't move to New Orleans, but you might like it. Just remember to stay safe, and don't run with the wrong crowd (NOPD or otherwise).

Why would you think I've never been there? I've never lived there, but I've been there more than once. It was sort of a childhood dream to live there one day. Plus, if this works out, I could probably end up with an almost free Masters degree at Tulane.

And the whole point is that I can't do only one thing at a time because I want to do the Reserves. That is not a full time job. I need another job at the same time, and I would like that to be police work. I would like that to be police work in New Orleans, and therefore would need to do Reserves in New Orleans. I'm asking for advice precisely because I can't do one thing at a time, and that has made this very complicated.

To each his own. Stay away from the Hoodoo shops.

You'll need to do the reserves first. I somehow doubt that NOPD will be fond of the idea of you getting hired on, then leaving for initial training for a few months. Of course, you could ditch the Coast Guard idea and enlist in the Marines. They'll hook you up with boot camp in no time

I am going to go ahead and say the same, no dept. is going to cater to your needs and wants. If you want to work there then ok. If you want to do the Reserves as a Coasty, mudpudler, cool. But you have to do one at a time. With the Coast Guard any thing can change, and if you say O, i want to do this on this date and not deploy or whatever, you can find yourself never in LE since you'll be out with a bad...bad..record.
