So, I have a general plan, but I thought I'd solicit you all for your opinions on feasibility and suggestions. I'm kind of anxious about timing everything so that graduation, Reserves enlistment, job, and moving to a new state align as closely as possible. Who knows if it's even possible!
I will graduate with my BA sometime this coming summer. I am also currently in the process of enlisting with the Coast Guard reserves, preferably as a Port Security Specialist. Now I'm thinking about looking for openings Louisiana so I can also hopefully work for NOPD (I know I asked for your opinions and suggestions, but please don't tell me to not apply for this department; I've read all the posts about it already). I live in NY, so I would take a trip during Spring Break in mid-April to do the application in one go (they are very accommodating for out of state applicants).
I heard that if everything works out with the USCG, I could do Basic in the summer. However, I have one more class I need to take so I'd most likely have to delay Basic until after the summer. Unless there is a way to get trained and then delay deployment by one semester to finish the class.
Just so you know, I have a clean record and a good GPA.
If I don't get into NOPD (though I have no reason to think I won't get in, who knows), then I would still do the Reserves in NY. So here is my question: is it doable for me to time this so that I know for certain about NOPD (for which I'll apply in April) before locking myself in to a certain base for Coast Guard? Is it doable for me to have all of this arranged so that I can move to a new city with everything already aligned and ready for me? If I get offered a job for NOPD, and a spot with Coast Guard in Louisiana, would I do police academy or boot camp first?! How is this all going to work?
Thank you in advance!
