Ok all. I just want to try and clear up some questions that have been floating around on the message boards. I'm only posting this because the people I have been able to contact (from sources) have been telling me that the mass amount of confusion have been coming from this site and others like it. I was literally asked today by one of the ladies in charge of the FCIP (same lady that called BigDal for his offer) about the information floating around on this site. I am only posting this because I too am very anxious for the call and know how you all are feeling. I feel that I owe it to you all to post what I know.

    1. How does HQ decide who gets called for the academy?
It makes NO difference when we started the process. This is straight from the source who makes the vast amount of final offer calls. Even though region 2 started several months before region 1, 8 ect...makes no difference at all. The ONLY thing that matters is what region needs man power the most. Once an applicant starts the process (especially) in a region that needs the bodies, some are pushed through very quickly. This is because they need "X" amount of applicants that were allocated by OPM to go to FLETC. This being said, OPM does not look at where a region/applicant is in the process, just that a particular region has started the process and that region is in the most need for man power. The call is made to (the person I talked to today) and told "Hey, we need "X" amount of hires in region 1 for the "X" academy.", as they are most in need.

I was confused on this one so I got clarification today.
    2. Military preference.
Military preference only comes into play once the whole process has been completed by an applicant. I have 14 years of LE experience. Even though I am done with the process and have a bit of experience, it doesn't much matter. I was told that if 30 of us are cleared and finished with the whole process in region 4 (my region) and 25 are prior military (I am not) that all military get selected first, no matter rank and or scores. So that means that 25 military guys/gals go before me period. Region 4 has only had about 3 applicants in all the academies combined thus far, sooooo not looking to good for me right now.

    3. Why are some BI's taking longer than others?
This is due to the above. When a region starts the process that needs the help more so than the other regions that started before them, they get "fast tracked." So we (less need regions) get kind of placed on the back burner. This, on top of the obvious reasons as some need more investigating that others of course.

    4. Classes being cut?
No classes have been cut, as of yet. If classes are going to be cut, it will be later in the year and won't effect the near future academies.

    5. If classes are cut, who is the odd man out?
The regions with least amount of need......like mine. lol

    6. Can I jump to another region that has more need?
No. Only if you applied for multiple regions.

I hope I cleared up as much as I could. Please don't take me as a "Know it all". I'm just trying to help out brothers stressing about the same things I am. I'm lucky enough to have some good contacts that provided me with PS numbers to the people with the answers. And to the lady that was SOOOOO helpful to me today on the phone, you know who you are. I hope this clears up some of these annoying people (LIKE ME) calling you all the time! lol
I only posted that last because she told me that she floats around on here every now and then.

I know this process is frustrating to many of us, but we have each other on this site to lean on. I hope this helped guys. You Marshal hopeful, Irish..

LOL. I am in region 4 which is my home region. Don't get me wrong, this is where I want to work. Its just with the news I got today was like a swift keyz punch to the gut ( u know I love ya keyz) LOL. I was incredibly disappointed to hear that region 4 is quite far down on the list to have allocated slots for academies. I am one of the unlucky guys that work for a not so understanding department. My time is limited as this was a risk I decided to take. Now its time to pay the piper as it looks like I won't be seeing the good side of FLETC any time in the near future. (

        Irish,

Thanks for posting that info! That helps me understand a lot better what is going on with this crazy process. Were you able to find out which regions are at the top of the list? I am a region 7 applicant and I just figured this region would be higher on the list because of the border needing bodies. Thanks again for the helpful info!

Its people like you that I'm pulling for bro! Hang in there. I'm a true believer that good things happen to good people. We are all in this together. We are all somewhat competing with each other, but when the chips are down, we only have us. Its a tough process, for all involved. As for regions, not sure. You have a very good point about the boarders and could easily see you guys and gals going well before my region.

                Great post irishLEO!

Thanks for laying that out for us. It's a good reminder that the USMS is a national / federal organization with national / federal manning requirements and challenges, so that's how they think and operate.

Hey - if patience was easy, it wouldn't be a virtue...hang in there, everyone!

In response to irishleo- USMS HR is towing the line. What they told you is what they are supposed to tell you. Actually, I'm surprised they told you anything at all. As for the budget, fy2010 is dead and gone, we are already working on FY2011. Watch the state of the union address and you will get an idea where our budget will be. Managers have already been notifed there will be cuts next year. As for manpower allocation- yes, the southwest, NYC, DC etc will get the most openings. But every region will get positions. I know of at least two region four districts that are working six dusms short. Not to say they'll get sisx slots but they'll get some. What I've said before is- say southern west virgina has an opening- USMS HR sends swv management a list of names- swv management can select anyone they want from that list. They can even request someone not on the list at all. The district Marshal has a tremendous amount of say who comes into his district. I have been a DUSM for 23 years and have loved every minute. But, the USMS does what they want to do- if they management want you they will get you no matter where your at on the list. Don't get discouraged-this is the greatest hiring push that I've seen in my entire career. From the figures I've seen- if you've made it through the entire process- you have a good shot at getting a slot SOMEWHERE. Less than a third of those signing up for the informational are making the final cut. Good luck to you all- remember there is one class in March and two in April.

"Keyz punch to the gut" I like it! Thanks for the post IRISH you are a good man. I will probably just do blank posts to keep this at the top of the Forum. I can only imagine that Region 6 is on the bottom of the List as well.

                        Irish,
Great post. That certainly cleared up a few of those lingering unanswered questions. Still the only thing to do is and wait til the call comes..... Whenever that will be. Just have to be patient I guess. Thanks for the info..

Well I have a hard time buying the whole deal on all vets getting selected first no matter what....i've heard varying explanations on that from HR. Let's think about that though, if the person who is ranked #1 overall on the list is passed over by individuals ranked #50, #57, and #60 simply b/c they are "vets" that would open up some serious liability issues. Legally speaking, veteran preference gives you five or ten points, it doesn't act as an automatic trump over better qualified candidates. Also, there are clearly plenty of vet applicants in all regions, guys like BigDal and others who aren't vets wouldn't have received final offers if this were the case. I would think the five or ten points is simply added to your over all ranking, which by default will mean many veterans will be hired first, but certainly not all. If that were the case, the entire USMS would be comprised of former military. Just my humble opinion.

I'm saying, that hiring the lower ranked candidate first (i.e. #39 over #5) defeats the entire purpose of having candidates ranked to begin with. Vet Preference is given by law but it isn't some automatic trump over everybody else in the applicant pool. If after adding the five or ten points, the vet candidate still has a lower ranking than the non-vet candidate, then I really can't fathom the hiring agency selecting the aforementioned lower ranked veteran first. I'd like for somebody to find the legal justification to support that type of hiring practice on OPM. I'm just saying I think that particular piece of information is off-base some what. More than likely many vets will be hired early on because the 5 or 10 pts will leap frog them on the ranking sheet over non-vets.
