  • Maybe a DUMB QUESTION?

HI. I have a question and some may thing it is dumb, I have been asking this for years. I have a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. I think I am in good shape for a bigger guy, but all of these law enforcement agencies want people with experience but how are people like my self supposed to get experience if no agency is willing to pick me and others like me??? It's frustrating. I have been in the job market for 2 years. I have sent out over 100 applications from, California to New York. I don't know what I am doing wrong? So I guess the question is, where is somewhere I can get some DAMN experience? I would have gone into the military but by the time I talked to a recruiter the standards changed. Sorry it may be a dumb question but I need some help. Thanks

Most state prisons are begging for help and there is tons of OT available (at least in WI prison's there is). They (WI anyways) do have lower standards and starting pay is around $15.00 per to start, but you get great benefits and state retirement. By lower standards I mean this...there are some officers that got fired from local LE agencies or have multiple OWI's that have been hired in WI DOC (dept of corrections).

Why are you getting denied? Are they giving you reasons besides experience? Is there something in your background or maybe you don't interview well? 100 applications is alot without even get a sniff with someone.

Find a Corrections job, BOP is hiring or local counties.

          To Jonnylawman38

I don't know why I'm being denied. I have had a few sniffs but that's about it. There was one thing I had to clear up medically but that's all good now. Another was the PT test was crazy but that was in the begining I am in better shape now. Maybe they are just putting together a list of possibilities ie,took the NYPD exam 3 going on 4 years ago and nothing still. There is nothing I have to hide in my background. I'm the type of person that will tell the truth no matter whom I'm speaking to. Maybe I just have the worst luck ever? Interviewing I think I feel I'm OK. I always address them as mam, sir, sgt, LT and so on. I have taken one poly and never heard anything back, I told the truth but I was so nervous maybe I failed.

Have you tried the corrections route? Get a couple years experience with some good evaluations/reviews from superiors and that can only help. It will also network you with others. Lots of information I have gained throughout the years in regards to interviews have come from other people. Whenever someone has an interview with a local LE agency I always ask them what did they ask you? How did the process go? Were the questions LE related or more "tell me about yourself". Keep trying, keep your head up.

Also, get on the employment website with the city, county, state that the depts you are interested in working at. Then apply to non LE jobs. If you are already on the "payroll" it might help and go toward your retirement. Have you just applied to the big city/county/state jobs? Check the neighboring suburbs. Also, and this is a "don't try this at home" type of advice, but you could try changing your tactics in the interviews. Instead of the nice guy respectful mode, try being more aggresive. If that doesn't work then come to Memphis, TN. we will hire just about anybody. (Our suburbs in MS and AR would really like a guy with a degree, as they loose alot to Memphis PD). Good Luck. Oh Yeah, BOP is a great idea like the other poster said.

I personally feel the same way that I am strongly considering joining the Air Force and go through their Security Forces path.

Don't join the Security Forces path, if you want something for your resume and gain experience that is not it. I would say something operational where you get out and see the world, work in small groups and are required to make decisions on your own... Security Forces you will not get that until you are in at least 8 to 9 yrs, what you will get will be a lot of time tearing apart government vehicles just to keep from going insane or counting cars driving by or sitting on a post in bad weather or sitting at a gate for 12hrs checking id cards. Unless that is your thing, most people hate that job and when I came in if you washed out of your job you were sent to Security Forces school. Not saying that Security Forces Airman are all dumb, but you definitely don't need to be a rocket scientist to do that job.

Wha? You mean standing on the flight line burning up in hot sun/freezing in the cold rain isn't fun?

I knew a security forces guy in the AF, he hated it.

What standards in the military has changed drastically (by the time you talked to a recruiter)? All medical, psychological, physical, and criminal standards have not really changed that much. So, which standard or standards has changed?

The military really is the best place to get some of the so-called DAMN experience. And unless you have a medical issue (or criminal background) that could prevent you from doing military service, you could serve your country and gain some valuable experience.

If you're thinking military, talk with active, national guard, and reserve recruiters about OCS. If you can't get OCS, then go over to the local university and talk to the Army ROTC recruiter about 2 yr program. They'll put you on scholarship for 2 yrs, get a Masters, do 4 yrs as active duty officer, come out as Captain and go to any agency you want. But there's an age limit. Was 26 years old if you didn't have prior service, but that was 10 years ago. Not sure what it is now.

I'm not sure what you are looking for specifically, but I have found that getting personal works the best. I don't have LE experience, but I am an applicant for the ICE SA position. I would recommend contacting your local offices (dependign what career you're looking to get into) and ask how you can get in contact with a recruiter. I got my pin to take the initial test by meeting with a recruiter and apparently he found me a suitable applicant...after that it's up to you to study hard and ACE the exam. Good luck!

Good plan. From what I've heard, being a prior military officer is money for getting into LE, especially federal. Beyond resume building, you'll surely have good times and do things most people only see in movies.

I to were once in your shoes!
I graduated college with a CJ Degree not top in my class but with a 2.5 average. Once I graduated I started to apply to State and local agencies in NC and got NO WHERE FAST. I felt as though I had a degree and the world by the B*****#, I felt as though I was a hot commodity. Well that wasn't true!! I too felt as though I needed experience so I decided to join the military where I ended up joining Military police in the Army going in as a Specialist not an LT. Once completeing AIT and Basic returned back to my duty station where I was selected to become a canine officer. Worked explosive dogs and drug dogs. Completed my 5 years and was granted an Honorable discharge. Started to apply again 9/11 happened and I figured for sure I would get hired. NOPE again I got NO WHERE FAST. I didn't apply everywhere my interest was police officer or State police. I didn't apply to air marshals, at the time they were a hot commodity. I was hired by TSA finally in Dever Colorado but was put on the reserve list. So that was just a hurry up and wait game. As stated above from some users I was going to go Federal BOP in Colorado, this was my last resort. I didn't want this position but was going to take it if accepted. I then applied to FPS and US Customs now CBP. Well FINALLY I was offered both positions at the same time, FPS Officer only went to GS-8 CBPO's went to GS-11 so I decided on the CBPO.

So, I guess what I am saying is IT's a LONGGGGGGGG ROAD ahead!!!
The job market SUCKS right now everyone is loosing there jobs not getting them! So I guess be patient and as keep pounding the pavement cause eventually something will break. Take every test that you can possibly take!!!

JUST MY 2 CENTS YOU CAN KEEP THEM!!
