I hope this is the correct place for this question. I am just a lurker and was hoping to find some advice.
I am 23, in college, holding a steady corporate job to pay my way through school. I have a long term goal to work in LE.
I live in Michigan, about the worst place to attempt to break into this field. I am exploring either joining a branch of the military (Probably Air Force or Coast Guard if I do), or trying to find a department who is accepting and hiring civilians to become trained and work for them. I am willing to look anywhere in the country at this point.
I applied as a reserve officer at a local dept a year and a half ago, passed the written test and oral interview a few months ago, but they were recently put on a hiring freeze. My intention was to work as a reserve (and my full time job) until I could find something better in Michigan. With our market the way it is, I think I'm better off to go somewhere else for a few years, then think about transferring back here (my long term goal is to end up back in MI).
That's a long post to ask this:
Are there departments that are accepting (and hiring) people like me? I have no academy training whatsoever. If so, who should I be talking to? I was told to inquire with Dallas and Cleveland for starters.
Any advice you have would be appreciated.
Thanks,
