    APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 ARE FOR THE MARCH 2010 TROOPER CLASS #49


    Salary: $17.39 per hour while in the academy. $19.54 per hour upon graduation.

    Duties: Enforces Kansas traffic and vehicle laws. Positions available statewide. Must be willing to live and work anywhere in Kansas. Must pass written and verbal exams which will be given October 17, 2009 in Salina, KS.

    Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent.
    Necessary Special Requirements: Must be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age. Must complete a basic law enforcement training program recognized by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission and obtain certification as a law enforcement officer from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission before being given permanent status. At time of appointment, candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services and be required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency. This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties and therefore, candidates cannot have been convicted of, and must be free of any diversions from, a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C. § 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9). Persons applying for Positions with KHP may be subject to back ground investigations and/or drug screening. ADA/EOE/VPE.

        Actually, based on the cost of living they are paid very well. Salaries are relative based on location as you go across the US.

        Wisconsin (I see that is your home state) State Patrol starts at 40 cents more per hour but the cost of living, housing and taxes there are considerably higher- AND on top of that they have to have an associate degree to apply.

          In Kansas, the pay is not bad at all. It's not even bad for Kansas City, though not quite as high as some local KC area agencies. Troopers also get a nice bump when they complete the academy.
