I put it on my job application under my job history. Plus, I bring it up in interviews that I know what the job entails because of my experiences as an Explorer.

In my opinion, other than a education, nothing prepares you for a career in law enforcement than becoming an explorer!

PM me if you want further info. on the Explorer program.

My experience was so long ago, I don't have anything to prove I did it. My fault for sure. I plan to contact my local authority to try to get involved again.
    Good luck

I will do the Explorer program if my department offers it.

I would also contact local police departments and ask if they ever do "ride-a-longs" or have an explorer program. I have gone on some of these when I was 18. It may not help your resume, but I believe anything that you do to show your serious about LE is worth something.
    Good luck

The school I am looking at does.

    Thanks for your help.

    Brinksta,

ROSchwoe is correct, try to get something other than a CJ degree. If you want you can still minor in it. Try a foreign language or IT would work but in the end if you just want to be a local a CJ degree will work. If you want to be a FED Agent later on in your life (before 37) try to diversify yourself.

    1. Stay off of Police Blotters and out of Reports
    2. Continue not to mess with Drugs
    3. Get that Four Year Degree
    4. Get life experience.
    5. Repeat step 1

Good luck, also volunteer work would also be helpful!!
If I choose to do volunteer work then how would that be recorded?

Is it recorded in the social security network just like a paying job, or do you just have to tell BI and they just go by your word?

started a topic Preparing For Law Enforcement

    Preparing For Law Enforcement

I am 18 years old and strive to be a Police Officer. I am wondering what I can do right now to make my resume look better when I apply. I am up for anything as long as it helps me fulfill my dream.

I have had only two tickets.

    1. No Seatbelt
    2. 10 MPH over speed limit

The only thing that I have done wrong in my life is stealing a small amount of candy from where I used to work.

I have never touched drugs and I have tried alcohol, but I do not drink.

I plan on getting my Criminal Justice degree.

What do you think about my chances of getting accepted when I turn 21?
(I live in a town in Oklahoma with 47000 people in it)

Also, how can I improve my resume?
