In my opinion (which isn't worth much) I would go with the sure thing (the local department). I'm not an expert but from what I've read on forums here the Secret Service hiring process is extremely time intensive. You could say "no" to the local department, put all your eggs in the Secret Service basket, and end up without a chair when the music stops, which would suck.

I don't think any department is going to let you go through their academy, pay your way, and then allow you to leave 6 months later to go federal. It seems like many require some kind of contract to stay on for X amount of time to get a return on their investment (at least some depts. in the Chicagoland area are like that). I think that you are going to have to choose one, at least for the short term.

Even if you do go local and have a dream of working for the Secret Service, don't give up on it. Any professional experience will only get you closer to that goal.
This is for all you new people. I only have one rule: everyone fights, no one quits. You don't do your Job i'll shoot you myself.

This week, I received a call from the Secret Service about an application I put in and they want to talk to me. To me, this is as good as it gets. I know I'm not hired yet, but should I start going through the process with the SS even though I am about to start the academy? Would the SS work with my academy and FTO schedule during the hiring process? I would feel bad leaving a department that just spent their time hiring me, but I'm afraid that if I wait a couple of years after I've gotten my local PD experience, they might not be hiring or might not want me then. I will talk to the Agent about this, but for the past few days we've been playing phone tag. I am fresh out of college.
          TNrecruit,

Congratulations on being picked up by your local academy. Being hired by any police agency means that you are of quality material. I don't mean to bust your chops, but whenever you make an abbreviated reference to the Secret Service, please don't use the term "SS". The appropriate abbreviation is USSS (United States Secret Service). SS is generally associated with the Nazi Secret Police during WWII, and I don't think you want to associate our USSS with them.

Unfortunately, the Service will not work with your academy schedule and your FTO during your application process, unless you have a very accommodating recruitment specialist in the field office. The days and times you will be in training are the days and times that the field office is open, and I don't think you're academy instructors will be too happy about you calling in sick. Are you applying for an SA or UD position? If your application is for SA, then the Service is very selective in their process and they do want to see you make every effort to come whenever they set you up for your initial interview, TEA exam (or POST if you're UD), panel interview, medical, poly, and BI interview.

Again, I don't know if you're applying for UD or SA, but I will tell you that working for your local PD for 2-3 years will help you tremendously if you decide to apply later as an SA applicant. Right now from what I've seen, many of the people who get in are either former military or former local law enforcement, with advanced degrees.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time. Rather, I want to give you some insight. I'm happy to help if you need more advice. Take care.

            Local

I would definately go with the sure thing of the local PD . The USSS is a fine agency as we all know but the application process is lengthy and is very time consuming. By no means will the local academy give you the days away from training, unless you are diagnosed by a doctor to be in bed sick. I would go with the local PD and get you experience , plus sometime thingDO actually happen for a reason. You may love the local PD and you can still be close to home and family/friends. The after a year you want to apply for USSS I would go for it , and the experience that you gained will make you a more attractive applicant(eventhough it's not alot). Good luck in whatever you choose, but keep in mind I know of three people right now that have been in the USSS process for over 2 years, and I have been in ICE's process for close to 3 yrs!! The federal gov't is not something that will employ you within a year let alone two years. (besides some lucky people ) Get through the local academy wait a years and apply...by the time you get hired you'll have 2-3 years local and the experience under your belt. just my .02

And believe me, those years of LE experience make all the difference. I applied to the USSS for a SA position about a year out of college and got a letter saying that I was not selected to take the TEA and to try applying for a UD division. I did and had an initial interview, but ultimately decided to go local instead and try again for the SA when I had some experience. Now less than four years later thats exactly what I did and low and behold, I got an interview for an agent position. Anyway, good luck to you whatever you decide.

I am in the same boat. have a few applications in with 2 other federal agencies. i was hoping to atleast get the initial test in by the time my academy started but it didnt happen. so now i have made the choice to finish the academy and get a local or somewhat local job first. i am still young so the federal job which is a slim long shot(but still my overall goal) can wait.
I don't have to be careful. I got a gun.
