  • Federal Law Enforcement eligibilty

I amvery strongly interested in becomming a federallaw enforcement officer such as FBI agent or US Marshal. I am a former county police officer. former soldier and current national guard officer.
Heres the rub. I am 40 years old and the requirements al say you have to be under 37. Is there any possible way that I can get a waiver? Can I use my active duty military time? an I write somebody? I will do almost anything to get a chance to try out. I know I can pass the physical stuff if given the opportunity.

Shoot for the Border Patrol. Otherwise, you're pretty much out of luck...

Unfortunately the age limits are rigid and waivers are very, very, very rare. The Border Patrol age limit is before you turn 40, so you are also over that age limit as well. You could try for several other Federal law enforcement jobs that don't have an age limit. There is the FBI police, CIA police, Pentagon Police, VA police and a few others I did not mention. The drawback is that most of these agencies are in the DC area primarily except the VA police.
God created some police officers perfect, the rest he put in cars.

Thanks. Thats what Iwas afraid of. My sister lives in the DC area so moving thereisnt a big problem. But all those suggestions are uniformed jobs. They are ok, but I have a college degree and was loking for more of an investigative agent type job. Nothing wrong withuniform. I have been there and done that.

There is a small glimmer of hope. Do some research into the Merit Service Protection Board (MSPB) decision in the case of Isabella v. Department of State. Isabella fought the age restrictions based on the Veteran Employment Opportunities Act (VEOA) and won.

However, your situation may differ from Isabella's and there is always the possibility that other agencies will fight this case in the federal courts, rather than yield to the MSPB ruling. The MSPB ruling is far from the last say on the matter.

I don't want to get your hopes up, as I think it's unlikely the MSPB ruling will stand, but for now there is a possibility that you too may be able to get around the age limit.

            Good luck.

You could apply for Investigative Specialist -1801 series position with the FBI. They do surveillance for FBI Special Agents in support of the overall mission and can be at any field office. There is no age requirement. Here's an old job posting . Unfortunately, it just closed on Jan 16th. They advertise this job every 3-6 months so you can keep checking USAjobs.gov for the next announcement.

Here's a thread over on Fedsoup about the position.

The only thing to keep in mind is this is not a law enforcement position. So if you don't mind being support to law enforcement then there are several positions that you would qualify for.
