At 9:30 last night an elderly neighbor called to see if I heard a gunshot. I hadn't heard anything and neither had my wife.
This morning I get an email from her.
"Well, found the source of last night's loud noise - a can of Diet Coke froze and exploded in my fridge (top shelf at the very back). The kids had put it right under the place where the cold air comes into the unit because they were stuffing drinks in anywhere they could find a space. Guess the insulation muffled the sound enough that I thought it was outside. But you could not believe the mess.
I found it about 10 PM when I went in to get a cold drink. The chunks of frozen coke had ricocheted everywhere, as well as run down the back wall and then started to melt. Anyway, took me an hour to clean it up. Had to take everything out of the fridge, and disassemble part of the shelves/drawers, and wipe down everything. I'm actually surprised it didn't break any of the glass shelves.
Anyway, guess that explains why no one else but me was outside looking for boogey men last night."
